The Competition

Samantha and her friend Pamela were walking in a shopping mall when! They came across a brightly coloured notice pinned onto the notice board. The notice board stated that a baking comipetition was going to be held at the end of the week in the shopping mall. The winner would walk away with a cash prize and hamper worth $300. The notice further stated that only feenagers were welcomed.

When Samantha read it, she became quite excited. Just a month ago, her mother had started to teach her to bake cakes and cookies. She had found it rather enjoyable.

Pamela’s eyes shone when she read what the winner would receivei Pamela declared to Samantha that she was entering the competition and was confident that she would win the competition. Samantha’s heart sank at that. It was true that whatever Pamela ventured into, she would alwaysi succeed. Pamela's mother would go on and on praising her daughter’s accomplishment to everyone. Samantha wished that just once she could win at a competition and have her mother raving about her.

With that glum mood, Samantha entered her house. She plopped herself on the sofa quite depressed. “So young and so sad,” commented a voice from the corner. Startled, she turned her head only to see her grandmother tucked in a corner knitting swiftly away. Before Samantha could say anything, her grandmother held up her hand as if to say ‘stop’. “I want to hear the truth,” declared her grandmother firmly.

Samantha poured out the whole story about the competition and Pamela. Her grandmother listened quietly and thoughtfully. “If I help you in this competition, will you promise to keep your room eternally clean?” asked her grandmother half humorously and half seriously. Samantha chuckled and nodded delightedly. Her grandmother lowered her tone dramatically and confessed to Samantha that she had a secret cake recipe which was handed down by her grandmother to her. Samantha’s eyes widened at that. Her grandmother further revealed that the cake was called ‘spiced semolina cake’. “The secret ingredient is a specially created spice that gives a taste that one is eating roses!” Samantha’s grandmother further revealed.

The day of the competition arrived. Thirty teenagers were participating in the competition They were divided into three groups of ten. Samantha and Pamela were in the last group.Samantha saw Pamela surrounded by her parents and well-wishers. Pamela was a picture of confidence mixing and beating her mixture.

When the competition ended, Samantha froze in fright for a second but quickly recovered when she saw her grandmother in the distance.

“The winner of this year’s baking competition is Samantha Lee!” announced the judge Her master creation is absolutely scrumptious,” the judge further announced. Her parents and friends congratulated an overjoyed Samantha and even Pamela who looked a bit shaken came to congratulate her. Samantha hugged her grandmother delightedly. She would never forget that day.
