The Conman

“Excuse me, I need help. Can you tell me where I am? I haven’t the slightest idea what I’m doing here too!” I was approached by a young gentleman in his late twenties while I was seated on a bench at Max Street.I had an appointment with Tom to visit the museum and was waiting for him

What shocking statements! I was taken aback when the well-dressed gentleman with a dark complexion and thick moustache posed me those questions. Could he be a lunatic? Or possibly someone acting for candid camera? I took a quick glance around me and having convinced myself that there were no hidden cameras around, I took a good look at him again. He was holding a wad of fifty dollar notes in his hand and there was a red handkerchief showing from the breast of his leather jacket. He was obviously a foreigner, probably a tourist who had perhaps suffered from a sudden attack of amnesia.

I proceeded to ask him what his name was and where he was from. He told me his name was Mr. Tillian,a tourist from the Middle East. That was the only information he could ever remember for he had a paper in his pocket which read “Mr. Tillian from Israel”. As he had no passport with him, I had not the slightest clue what to do. Mr. Tillian went on to say that perhaps, after a rest, his memory might return again as it did a few days ago. He stared blankly at the ground and turning Suddenly towards me asked me if I had some small notes to change with him. He explained that all his money was in the fifty-dollar denomination and it would be diflicult for him to take a cab later. I took out my wallet and gave him five ten-dollar notes in exchange for one fify-dollar note. He then asked if I could direct him to the nearest money changer.

Just then, Tom arrived and saw both of us talking together. It was such a relief to see Tom. He was intelligent and usually knew how to cope with moments of uncer.tainty. I told him briefly about Mr. Tillian’s plight and waited for his response. Instead of responding sympathetically to his misfortune, Tom looked at him and asked,”Have you been to the police to ask for help? If you knew you would have an attack of amnesia, which you remembered you did recently, why didn’t you take precautions to bring information about yourself with you?No tourist would walk about without a camera or some pamphlets concerning directions in Singapore.”

Tom’s questions came forth fast, one after another.As he spoke, his sharp eyes were fixed on Mr. Tillian.Looking very much frightened all of a sudden, Mr. Tillian mumbled some excuses and walked away. He broke into a run after a few steps.

It was only then that I realised that Mr. Tillian was lying. Taking a closer look at the note in my hand, I was dismayed to find that it was a fake note. Mr. Tillian,the professional conman had cheated me of my money!What a villain! I wished Tom had arrived earlier to save me from committing such an “expensive’ mistake. Shaking his head slowly in sympathy, he tried to console me before suggesting that we make a police report concerning Mr. Tillian.
