The Danger Of Leaving A Knife Around

It was nearly five p.m. A housewife, Mrs. Eng, was in the kitchen. She was preparing dinner for her family. Her husband, Mr. Eng, was at work. He worked as a factory foreman. Her five-year-old son, Tom, was asleep in the bedroom. As she was cutting vegetables with a sharp knife suddenly the phone rang. She stopped her task and went to answer the phone call in the dining room. It was a long-distance call from her sister-in-law, Doris. As she chatted over the phone, all of a sudden, the sky turned overcast. Thunder roared and lightning flashed, waking Tom from his sleep. He scurried to the kitchen to look for his mother. He was seeking comfort in her arms. However, there was no sign of his mother.Then something caught his attention. A knife was lying besides some green leafy vegetables. Being curious, he approached it. At this juncture,he was not careful. He slipped and stepped on it, injuring his right foot. ”Ouch! I’ve stepped on a knife! Help me!” he screamed.

At this juncture, his mother hung up the receiver on hearing his loud cries and rushed into the kitchen. She was horrified to see Tom groaning in pain. There was a large gash on his right foot. It was bleeding profusely. There was a small pool of blood on the floor. There was a knife lying beside him. It was stained with blood. Mrs. Eng applied medicine and bandaged her son’s wound. A minute later, she rushed him to hospital for medical treatment.

Her folly of leaving a knife around nearly cost her son’s life.
