The Day A Dog Broke Loose From Its Master’s Grip

One dark, windy morning, a frail white-haired man, Thomas, took his pet dog, Blackie, for a walk. They were walking down the slope of a narrow road in the city suburb when, suddenly, the dog broke loose from his master's grip. It ran down the slope to chase a black cat. Thomas was at wits' end. He screamed, "Blackie, come back!" He waved frantically at a postman trudging wearily up the slope. He was on his rounds. Alerted by his cries, the postman tried his utmost to catch the dog. However, it was of no avail. The dog proved too fast for him. At this juncture, a speeding timber-laden lorry emerged from a side road and into the main road. It came screeching to a stop as the two animals ran into its path. Blackie was lucky as it missed death by centimetres. The cat, unfortunately, was under a wheel of the vehicle. It died horribly on the spot.

The lorry driver flew into a rage and alighted from the vehicle.Blackie barked at him when he picked up a stick to beat it. Blackie crouched and sprang at him, causing him to trip and fall heavily on the road. Blackie sank its teeth on his right leg, sending him screaming for dear life. He then lifted the stick and aimed a heavy blow at Blackie. Blackie was whining in pain from its broken leg. It was seen limping down the road while the driver was staggering towards the kerb. His right leg was bleeding profusely. All of a sudden, a loud cry pierced the silence, ”Do not beat my dog to death! I love my Blackie dearly!” Thomas pleaded.

Thomas kept up the chase for Blackie for the next hour or so. The chase ended when he found his injured dog hiding behind a bush. He took it home.
