The Day A Large Plastic Bag Gave Way

One early afternoon, an elderly woman, Mrs. Peggy Lim, was leaving a wet market. Bespectacled and frail, she was trudging wearily along the pavement. She was carrying a large plastic bag laden with foodstuffs like potatoes, tomatoes, dried prawns, cuttlefish, onions, garlic, chillies, leafy vegetables, lean pork, six large fishes, two chickens, a duck, a packet of salt and a jar of jam. Soon she found that the load was too heavy to carry and stopped for a rest by the pavement. Just then, a group of mischievous boys came into view. Mrs. Lim did not take much notice of them. Besides, her eyesight was poor.

At this juncture, the naughty boys spotted her and wanted to play a trick on her. They began trailing her, much to their amusement. All of a sudden, Mrs. Lim’s plastic bag gave way and foodstuffs began to fall out without her knowledge. The boys were giggling and picking up the foodstuffs that had dropped out.

As Mrs. Lim was about to cross a busy road, the jar of jam came crashing to the ground. She was taken back and sensed something amiss. She felt that the bag was much lighter than before, and was puzzled. She looked into the bag and was alarmed to see a gaping hole. Only the leafy vegetables, two large fishes and dried foodstuffs remained in it. As she turned round, all the mischievous boys fled in different directions. All her other foodstuffs that had fallen out were gone.
