The Day I Became A Babysitter

During the December holidays last year, my maid fell very ill. She was so ill that she had to be hospitalised for a few days. On the day that my mother brought her to the hospital, my aunt, who works part-time had to attend an emergency meeting in her office, so my two little cousins were with us. Therefore, I had to be the babysitter to my brother, who is four years old and my cousins who are four years old and three years old. I had no choice because there was no one else available at such short notice. Besides I was having my holidays too.

At first, the children were quite well-behaved because they had just awakened from sleep. I made sure they ate their breakfast. My brother, Tony and my four-year-old cousin,Samantha were quite used to eating by themselves, so they did not make a mess. But three-year-old Shaun was very messy, and I had to give him a quick bath after breakfast.

Tony and Samantha settled in front of the television and watched their favourite Teletubbies video. Shaun, for some reason does not like watching the Teletubbies, he prefers Barney. So, he took hold of the remote control and started fiddling around with it. I was reading a book, so I was not really aware of what was going to happen.

When Samantha saw what Shaun was doing, she snatched the remote-control away, and Shaun screamed and cried loudly.I groaned because when Shaun kicked up a fuss, he would really throw a huge tantrum. He kept screaming that he wanted to watch Barney, while Samantha shouted back that she wanted to watch Teletubbies. My brother burst into tears when he saw the commotion.

I did not know what to do at first. They were making a lot of noise and it was driving me crazy. Then I had a brainwave. I switched off the television, and announced that it was story time. My brother stopped crying but Samantha continued to shout and Shaun continued to scream. I was getting quite annoyed by then, and I was about to lose my temper. I shouted at Samantha to keep quiet and I threatened to lock Shaun in the bathroom if he continued to cry. The effect was amazing. Shaun stopped crying immediately and looked at me with pleading eyes. Samantha also stopped shouting.

I was quite tired and did not really want to tell a story,but my brother insisted. So, I told them a silly little story and they seemed to enjoy themselves, all their quarrels forgotten. Then I played a few simple games with them. It was nearing lunch time and my mother had promised to be back for lunch. I was getting really anxious, but my mother managed to stick to her promise, and she appeared a few minutes later.

I was really glad to see my mother. It had been one of the longest and most tiring days I have ever experienced,even though I only babysat for about five hours.
