The Drug Bust

Frederick planned everything carefully. He was our leader and we all looked up to him and acknowledged that he was the best of us all. Hence when he said that we should charge at the drug smugglers when they were making their deal, we were sure it was the best thing to do. We realised that in order to make the charges stick in court, we had to catch them in the act – not before or after. When Frederick said that he would signal the team by blowing on his whistle, we thought nothing of it as well. It seemed to be a good method. Actually we had tried it before and it had worked.

We lay an ambush at the shed. It was a lonely place and we had rubbed insect repellent generously all over ourselves. We had been told that it would give us protection for two hours, which would be enough.As I sat in the dark and peered all about me through the night vision device, a thrill gripped me. I had done this many times, but still felt my heart beating fast. I looked at Frederick in the darkness. He grinned, showing a set of fine white teeth.

It was two hours later when I began to feel restless.My mind was full of doubts. Had the smugglers been tipped off? Was it a hoax? Were we at the wrong place?I began to itch here and there as the mosquitoes found their targets. I could not swat them as it would give away our position and Frederick would kill me if I did. The warning on the label of the insect repellent was accurate- the mosquitoes were after us. All I could do was rub more repellent while making as litle noise as possible.Ilooked longingly at Frederick as I tried to communicate mentally with him to call off the operation.

Then I heard sounds of chewing. I realised that Old Fred was eating something. He suffered from gastric problem and had to eat biscuits every now and then to ease the pain. I felt sorry for him. And then I saw some shadows moving: The smugglers had arrived. I gripped my revolver as I waited for the signal. The smugglers moved fast. They were just exchanging their goods for money. At any moment now, the signal would come. Then it dawned on me. Fred was eating and could not blow the whistle! I looked at him and saw him spitting out the biscuits hurriedly.

There was not a moment to lose. I grabbed the whistle from his hands and blew with all my might. It was a thrill to see the officers run down from their covers and form a circle around the smugglers. I rushed to join them and was aware of Frederick panting beside me.Johnny shouted a warning through the megaphone. The culprits put down their weapons and raised their hands sheepishly.

We put the handcuffs on them and loaded them into the vans. Frederick was a man of few words. AIl he did was tap me on the shoulder and say, “Thanks,Seng,” I grinned and nodded.
