Deepavali

Deepavali is a major festival in Singapore and one which Hindus all over the world celebrate. I am aware that this particular festival is not celebrated in such a grand manner in India. But that is not to be wondered at as it is probable that there are many festivals in India and that Deepavali is just one of them. In Singapore Deepavali is the only Hindu festival for which a holiday is given by the government.

To me, though I am not a Hindu, Deepavali is a symbolic festival. It celebrates the victory’of the god Krishna over the demon Naragasuran. It seems that under the demon’s rule he had forbidden lights to be lighted throughout the kingdom. It is clear that as in most ancient writings, the light referred to is symbolic and means knowledge. It is knowledge that the demon was trying to suppress throughout the kingdom. This is not to be wondered at as knowledge is power and if people have knowledge, they will not accept tyranny in any form. So the swift dispatch of Naragasuran by Lord Krishna is yet another story of the triumph of good over evil and the establishment of knowledge over superstition. With such as its meaning, Deepavali is a Singaporean festival — considering that we have more or less established ourselves as a society that has overcome ignorance and welcomed knowledge in all its forms.

Down to earth, Deepavali is a simple festival and it is a delight to see that it is more meaningful to the young than to adults. I am much pleased to see all my little neighbours proudly arrayed in their traditional Indian costumes and walk about with the security that they are in a society in which they are the most important elements-the future. Though I always join my Hindu friends in eating and drinking to celebrate the festival of lights, I am well aware that the festival means a lot more than cating and drinking and making merry.
