“What do you mean by saying you have no time? You never have time for the family!” came the accusing tone of Mrs Brimson.
“Don’t you dare start interrogating me as if I’m a criminal or you’ll regret it,” snarled Mr Brimson in return, flinging his clothes in a bag as he prepared to go out.
The policemen had just visited the family. Paul, their son. Had been caught shoplifting in a supermarket that day. Fortunately, his parents were at home, which was very rare indeed. After giving some feedback and warning against Paul’s suture behaviour, they left. The couple lost no time in hurling accusations at each other.
Mr Brimson, a sailor for many years, was seldom at home. His sailing assignments could take up to three weeks or more of his time every month. Even when he was back home, he would spend his time drinking at pubs in the evenings. Being accustomed to wife battery whenever he was in his foul moods, Mrs Brimson tried to avoid confrontations with him whenever possible. She had been busy working as a waitress in a few restaurants as Mr Brimson’s meager pay failed to make ends meet.Consequently, because of her preoccupation at work,Paul was neglected and his existence almost forgotten at times,
As Paul stood at the doorway looking at the fiery exchanges between his parents, he remained indifferent. Why should he be affected since it occurred every time his father came back from sailing? They were bound to be engaged in one form of quarrel or another. The difference in this latest experience was the visit of the two policemen because he was involved,
“You make such a lousy husband and father,”continued Mrs Brimson suddenly, as if urged by some unforeseen force to speak up.
She attempted to stop her husband from leaving the house. Mr Brimson shoved her aside rudely, sending her sprawling across the floor. She started sobbing and grabbing a shoe beside her, flung it at him. It missed him and glaring at her, Mr Brimson uttered a string of curses. Then, after threatening to beat her up if she made things difficult for him, he left the house.
Paul stood quietly beside his sobbing mother. He felt sick over the whole incident. Why couldn’t his parents sense the embarrassment caused by such frequent heated arguments? They might have argued over facts but never had they cast their glance at him. They didn’t bother to find out how he might have felt as an individual. All they did was to snarl at each other, oblivious to his presence. He recalled the conversation he had with the policemen on the way back. They asked him questions and listened, actually listened to what he wanted to say!Oh, how he wished his parents would have time just to listen to him. Must he continue with bad conduct just to get his attention?
