The missing necklace

It all started innocently enough. Martha, my classmate asked me to keep a birthday present she claimed she had bought for her mother. It was a brooch. “Kim,if the present is in the house I would be tempted to give it to her early. But if the brooch is at your house I can’t succumb to temptation,” Martha said to me one hot June day. I agreed because Martha was my classmate, though I didn’t know her very well.

The gift, a small square box, was wrapped in pink wrapping paper with yellow canaries all over it. Martha had odd taste in wrapping paper. I put the box nest to Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller “The Birds” in my bookshelf.”Birds of a feather flock together,” commented Martha when I told her what I had done.

Next day I met Tracy at school. She looked worried.What’s wrong Tracy I asked. “My mother’s diamond necklace is missing. You know the one you saw at my birthday party the other day,” said Tracy. I remembered the day clearly enough and most of our classmates had been there. I remembered that the necklace was very beautiful.

“My mother and father are very upset and suspect that one of our friends took it,” she said.

“Don’t worry Tracy. I am sure they will find it,”I said thinking what a horrible thing it would be if one of our friends had stolen the necklace.

A few days later, I heard a knock on the door. It was a police officer. He was investigating the disappearance of a diamond necklace belonging to Tracy’s mother. The officer proceeded to ask me a few questions and I gathered that he had been asking the same questions to all of us who had attended the party.

The next day, I went to my bookshelf to take a book to read. Something fell to the floor. It was the box that Martha had given me. I hoped it had not broken the brooch inside. Then just before I put back the box,a thought struck me. I peeled off the tape gently so as not to damage the wrapper and opened the box to check. I gasped with shock. It was a diamond necklace!I recognised it instantly as Tracy’s mother’s. This was because of the letter ‘M’ covered in diamonds in the centre. The initial stood for Tracy’s mother’s name ‘Mary’.Martha had stolen it! I could not believe that Martha,my own classmate, was a thief. I told my mother about it at once and she called the police.

Martha confessed to the crime. Investigations revealed that she had been stealing for over a year.The necklace was the most expensive item she had stolen to date. She had mostly stolen from friends. “I trusted her. How could she betray my trust?” I thought to myself.Then I realised that if the police had searched my house that day they would have discovered the necklace and I would have been framed. I would have been arrested.I was shocked that Martha could do that to a friend to save herself.

I decided that I would not be so trusting again.
