Taking the driving test in Singapore is one of the most difficult in the world. Everyone knows that: even I. But how difficult it was, I only discovered when I took the test.
Before I left, my father blessed me with good luck and gave a string of advice. I decided to take none of them. The reason was simple: he had failed the test six times and had passed only at the seventh. I was more interested in what my driving instructor had said.
I waited nervously at the testing centre for the tester to arrive. Finally, he came, walking sadly to the car. He looked like a typical civil servant – white shirt, glasses and minus any semblance of a smile. “Mr. Albert Lim?”he asked gruffly.”Yes”,I said. “Please get into the car”,he ordered.
In the car, he gave explicit instructions – minus feelings of any kind. I was nervous and fumbled at the controls. After a few nervous attempts, I managed to start the car and slowly we drove out of the testing centre. On the road, I thought carefully about what the instructor had told me. He had said, “Pretend that he is not there.I there”. So I”pretended’.
I believe I drove like a professional. I carried out all his instructions to the letter and immediately. I was sure he was impressed. Inwardly I felt a glow. When we reached the end of Queenstown, he said, “Go back to the centre.” I drove around the U-turn and headed for the centre and victory celebrations. I parked the car, waved to my instructor and followed the tester into his office.
“You drive very well,” he said. I felt the thrill rise within me, “Here it comes,” I thought. “But you are very nervous,” said the government representative. My heart sank. He looked at me intently and I looked back, my eyes pleading. “Sorry, I cannot pass you this time. Try again in six months and all the best to you,” he said. Then he got up, shook hands and lef.
I must have looked dejected when I stepped out.My instructor said nothing; just put his arm on my shoulder and led me to the car. At home Dad consoled me and congratulated himself for being always right about the driving test being the most difficult in the world. Hadn’t he failed it six times? My sister was ecstatic. She had passed at the first attempt and my failure proved, once and for all, that she was better than I. Sadly I went to my room and read my comics and cheer myself up.
