The Old Ongs

Mr. And Mrs. Ong celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of their wedding – 65 years of marriage – just last year and invited the whole block. All of us went to the party because they are a fascinating couple and are the elders in our block. They know everyone and everyone knows them. At the party, contrary to what everyone expected- but not at all surprising to anyone – the Ongs had hired a pop band. There were no long boring speeches and the Óngs saw to it that everyone just enjoyed themselves.

The Ongs are a happy couple. People who have been staying in the block from before I was born say that they had never heard the couple quarrelling – at least not aloud for anyone else to hear. They always eat together and are always together. Remarkably enough,though they are in their eighties, they are active for their age. They have alert minds and practice tai chi together every morning. They wake up early in the morning and walk about a kilometre to the park, do their tai chi exercises and then go for breakfast together. By the time they finish all their morning activities, it is about 9 o’clock.Almost immediately after they come home, Mrs. Ong begins to cook lunch. They have lunch at about I o’clock and then they start their visits to their neighbours.

The couple have only one activity they love to do:to visit people and talk to them. So, since there are ninety families in our block and a lot more people that the Ongs know in other blocks, Mr. And Mrs. Ong are never short of people to visit. Moreover, they are such a cheery couple that they are welcome in all our homes. As they sit in the sitting rooms of the apartments in the block,they old couple usually offer advice on how the neighbour’s problems can be solved. Owing to their advice, a few marriages have been saved.

Occasionally they also get involved with counselling the members of the younger generation. Quite contrary to expectations the Ongs find it easy to cross the generation boundary and talk to the younger set. Teenagers of the community can easily relate to the Ongs and take their advice. In fact the Ongs sometimes talk to the parents of the teenagers on how to guide them rather than try to keep them as children. Not a few teenagers have confided their problems to the Ongs so that the old couple has advised them and, quite often, spoken to their parents on the teenager’s behalf.

We used to be a little puzzled that the Ongs did not seem to have any relatives. Once one of the neighbours had asked Mr. Ong about their children. Tears had come to the old man’s eyes as he recalled that all his children have emigrated. They never even wrote anymore. In fact the old couple do not know how many grandchildren they have. Seeing that this was such a painful subject there is a general agreement among everyone that the subject should never be raised again. Meanwhile the Ongs are happy to look upon the adults in the block as their children and all the younger members as their grandchildren. Many of us have often wished that out own parents were more like the Ongs.
