The One-legged Dove

It was during the year-end holidays that my younger brother David began to trap doves. He used no bait. He simply picked thein off bushes and wire meshes.

Every single day of that holiday saw David returning with a dove ör two from his walk in the vast field epposite our house. One day David caught a one-legged dove. The dove was placed in a large cage. In this cage were all other captured doves. With the wilderness beckoning to them, I could feel the birds’ helplessness. So, one day, I unlatched the tiny door tó the birds’ cage. Quickly, the cage was emptied of its occupants. Only one dove was left. This was the one-legged bird. Gently I took it out and released it into the air. It could not fly well. However, still it did get away. David was furious.

One day, as David was walking home from school he spotted the one-legged dove. It was pecking about the ground before him. David picked it up. It did not resist. David was pleased.

Since then the one-legged dove has become a part of our family.
