The Painful Lesson Of An Inquisitive Boy

It was nearly six o’clock in the evening. The Lin family went into a restaurant for their evening meal. Daniel, aged ten, spotted a tank at the rear of the premises and left the table. The tank contained live prawns and was filled with water. Daniel was attracted to them. It was a rare sight. His desire to watch live prawns swimming in the water had come true. Daniel stared at the prawns in silent awe. Daniel had eaten prawns before. They were appetizing. Daniel loved especially prawns in tomato sauce. He stood there and was fascinated by the way the prawns were swimming in the water. Meanwhile the five dishes, that Daniel’s father, Mr. Lin, had ordered, arrived in single file. Mr. And Mrs. Lin and their eldest daughter, Peggy, were eating the food greedily when they saw Daniel not at his seat. Mr. Lin rose and called Daniel to return to the table.

At this juncture, Daniel was curious and put his hand into the tank to catch a live prawn. It pricked him, sending him screaming for dear life. He cried out, “Father, a prawn just pricked my hand. It’s painful!” Mr.Lin heard his cries and rushed to his side. Before Mr. Lin reached Daniel, he gasped and turned pale. Daniel slipped and hit the glass tank, causing the tank to crash to the ground. The noise was deafening. Broken glasses littered the scene, sending other diners scurrying for cover and to safety. The floor was wet and slippery with live prawns leaping in theil bid to stay alive. Restaurant employees dashed out and scooped up the live prawns. They were then transferred to another tank. Daniel was visibly shaken and his father comforted him.
