The Peanut Seller

A peanut seller used to come by my house when I was seven.The seller was a tall, dark Indian man. He was garbed in a white,long-sleeved shirt with a ‘sarong’. Wound neatly about his head was a small, white turban.

On top of this, he would balance a large, round aluminium tray upon which was a large variety of peanuts. He covered them with a piece of cloth.

The peanut seller never showed up on rainy days. On good days, he would only show up occasionally at my house. My siblings and I were always happy to see him. He rarely went off without a sale.

The peanuts he sold were delicious. Some were coated with fine sugar, some were roasted with salt and some boiled so soft that I could never satisfy myself from the small purchases that I could afford each time he came.

One strange thing about him though. I had never seen him ride any vehicle. He walked always with the load on his head. In the town center, I never saw him either. I wondered where he came from. After a few years, he stopped coming. I never found out what had happened to him.
