The Peril of Spreading Old Newspaper Around A Gas Stove

It was early evening when a housewife, Janet, entered the kitchen. She was going to prepare dinner for her family. Her husband and her school-going children were expected to be home at seven p.m. She intended to prepare five dishes for the evening meal. Prawns in tomato sauce, vegetables with abalone, spring chicken, steamed fish and chicken soup would line the table.

She lit the gas stove and began frying the prawns in tomato sauce. Fearing the stove would become oily and messy, she spread old newspapers around it. Oil and tomato sauce might spill over the stove. Just then, there was a loud cry. It was her one-year-old daughter wailing and pining for her. She was wet. Janet rushed into the room on hearing the commotion. She changed her daughter’s wet clothes.

At this juncture, there was a sudden gust of wind blowing from the kitchen windows. The old newspapers flew to the lighted stove and caught fire. Within seconds, the kitchen was enveloped in thick smoke. Meanwhile, Janet smelt something burning. She sensed something amiss. She carried her child in her arms and dashed into the kitchen. She was alarmed to see the kitchen in flames. She dashed out of the house to safety. Her house was razed to the ground.

She paid dearly for spreading old newspaper around a gas stove.
