The person who influenced me most in my life.

THE PERSON WHO INFLUENCED ME MOST IN MY LIFE

At an early age I was introduced to the Reverend, a monk at a monastery near my home. My mother used to visit him often and often took me with her. He is from Thailand and lives in the monastery with a few other younger monks. I was full of admiration for him from the day I met him. He was a soft spoken man always with a smile and a kind word to everyone. I was not of his faith, nor was my mother, but we got along with him and the other monks without any difficulty. All that we did — and willingly — was to show due respect to Buddha’s image which was enshrined in the temple. Having been taught, from a very young age, to respect all religions I had no problem with that.

The Reverend, as we called him — and we could never pronounce his name no matter how many times we tried – treats everyone he meets as if they are all equally very important. He is a learned man and has two degrees; one in mathematics and the other in philosophy when my mother grumbled to him that I was weak in pathematics, the Reverend took me under his wing and spent an hour everyday tutoring me. What started as a tutor-student relationship has now turned out to be a firm friendship. Besides improving tremendously in mathematjcs, I have also become adept at philosophical arguments. The Reverend is familiar with all religions and with most philosophies and it is a delight to talk to him. Often our discussions begin with something as mild as ‘Do you hear that bird singing?’. It is amazing that in a few minutes we will be arguing about ‘What exists in reality and what is only apparent.’ In spite of all the knowledge that I have gained from him, many of them from Buddhist and other scriptures, not once has he even hinted that I should become a Buddhist.

He has awakened in me a questioning mind and a thirst to discover the mysteries of the world. His influence on me is that now I believe that nothing is what it seems. I have made up my mind that I want to study philosophy and become as learned as this great man, who goes about so humbly covered in an saffron robe and owning nothing —and yet owning everything. Seen through the perspective that he has awakened in me, I see so many things around me which I would otherwise have missed. His influence on my life is great indeed.
