THE PLEASURES OF JOGGING

I look up at the clock: It is 4:00 pm. It is time for my daily jog. Within seconds I change into my running gear and leave my apartment. I reach the bottom of the slope near my block and begin to warm up. The Filipino maids, talking in Tagalog, are probably talking about me. They are probably commenting on my muscles and how attractive I look; but then again they might be commenting on that crazy chap who is going to run again. Who cares anyway? I enjoy what I am doing. Warm up over I begin to jog slowly up the slope. I get a warm feeling as I reach the top of the slope; I feel energized. Then I turn to run down the road; my destination is four kilometres away.

As I run, I feel the gentle breeze on my face. Soon I reach the bus stop and feel the curious eyes of those waiting for the bus. They are probably wondering why I don’t travel their way; much easier and less sweat. I turn and meet the eyes of a pretty Malay miss and she turns away self consciously. I run on. Then I reach the makeshift newsstand — illegal of course. The old grandmother is at it again; selling papers illegally. Cars are stopping to buy the evening papers. No, they are not really interested in the news; just the 4-digit lottery results.

Soon I reach the end of the road and turn sharply. I have to slow down now. Two reasons for this: I have to run uphill and a bevy of beauties are coming towards me. I have to be careful that I do not run into one of them – literally. They have just finished work in their factory across the road and are going home. All eyes are on me and they are giggling among themselves — probably commenting on my muscles. I control my panting; I don’t want them to know that I am actually suffering. Leaving the beauties behind, I reach the top of the slope. What a relief!

Only two more kilometres to go and downhill all the way. I bend down and let my weight carry me down the hill, effortlessly. The breeze against my face feels wonderful. I keep going, recovering from the climb that I had just been through. A cyclist comes towards me and I run into the grass patch to give way to him. He waves in thanks and I wave back.

Soon I am within a hundred metres of my end point – the 7-eleven store. I do a dash to expend all my energy. My legs are struggling and protesting, my heart is beating very fast. “Go!” I order and they obey me. I reach the store in seconds; panting furiously. I cool down for a while and then amble into the store. The girl behind the counter smiles as I pay for the Diet Coke. I smile back and walk out feeling the drink rushing down my throat. I smile to myself: Life is wonderful.
