THE PLEASURES OF SILENCE

Anyone who walks in a silent place, and keeps quiet to himself will have a beautiful experience. First of all, he will hear very soft sounds which he has not heard before. If walking at night, he will hear the sounds of the night creatures. Even the softest sounds which will usually escape the ear will be heard and appreciated. The senses will be more alert and hence will hear more. More than just hearing the sounds of the night, will be a lot of realisation. He will become aware of his heart beating, he will be aware of his breathing and even hear it and most of all he will realise that he is not the body but something resident within it.

Often the cares of the world carry us around and we have no time to think and reason clearly, nor do we have the time to ask who or what we are or even realise that we are. Keeping silent in a private place, undisturbed, we can take flight into self. Suddenly we will become aware of two distinct parts of ourselves — our minds and our bodies. We will become the self that thinks and directs the body. At that time we will see all humans as brothers and sisters. None will seem like strangers. We will see them all as like ourselves — with their problems struggling through the world trying to make successes of themselves. We will be in sympathy with others and even with people who have hurt us.

A moment in silence is a pleasurable activity, especially to be alone with our thoughts. It is at such times that confusing problems become clearer and the real values of painful experiences will become clear. We will see that in every pain there has been something to learn. A moment in silence will clear our heads and help us to make better decisions. When we are away from excitement, the real inner self rises to the surface and we see what we really value in life and what is just of surface value. We make peace with nature and with our inner self in silence and emerge ready to face the reality of the world. Great indeed are the pleasures of silence.
