THE PLEASURES OF WATCHING A MOVIE

I had waited two years to see the movie and when it arrived in Singapore, was among the first to see it. I had to see it in the theatre. I had long ago concluded that watching a full length movie over TV, through a video tape, was a far inferior substitute. To see ‘The Return of the Jedi’ at the theatre was an experience. I wanted to share it with my father and so invited him along. Inviting him along has distinct advantages. Even though I pay for the tickets, there will be a lot of activities to follow: Like a pizza for lunch. I got good tickets and so settled down to enjoy the movie.

It begins with a bang of course; the Star Wars series always do. Within seconds of the beginning, I am sitting on the edge of my seat. The rescue of Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt is a fantastic beginning to the movie. On the one hand Han is blind, on another, Leia is captured together with Luke and Chewbacca. Then the cute litle R2D2 springs into action and the fantastic rescue is underway. Within minutes Jabba and his gang are annihilated. I look at my father, he is sitting on the edge of his seat too: Like son like father!

Then comes the sad part as Luke goes to see his Master to complete his training. The visit is his last and Yoda dies. Then comes the last stage of the movie, and the trilogy, the destruction of the Death Star. Three exciting adventures are happening at the same time; all just as exciting. On one hand Han and Leia meet strong opposition to their planned raid on the moon, with their little furry friends — the Ewoks, on another the rebel forces launch and all out attack and on the third, Luke batles with his father – Darth Vader.

The emperor wants Luke, and he has to fight his own father even though he does not want to. Luke holds the key to the victory of the rebel forces. Darth Vader is defeated and, the emperor squeals with laughter as he atacks Luke Skywalker. Luke is helpless and everything seems hopeless. Meanwhile through some ingenuity and a little luck, Han and Leia are making some headway on the moon. The raid succeeds. The rebel attack too is coming through; only Luke is still fighting to save himself and his father. Then a twist! Darth Vader staggers to his feet, lifts the emperor and throws him into space: The deep love that every father has for his son wins through. I look at my father, in the darkness he smiles back.

The battle is not over; as Luke has to get his father out of the doomed Death Star. He hurries and the shuttle leaves just as the star explodes. The final scene shows Luke cremating his father and joining his friends in the victory celebration.

Wow, what a movie! Not one dull or slow moment.
