It was very odd. There were no people on the bus, but the engine was running and their belongings were there. This was indeed an unusual situation I thought.I recognised the bus as belonging to my company. I looked around for the driver . Fred. Where could they have gone, I wondered.
I raised my voice and gave a shout, calling out Fred’s name. There was no reply. I looked back at my bus. The passengers were talking excitedly among themselves. Then I signaled to them that I wanted to join them in the shouting. They responded enthusiastically and I think they must have created a noise that would have been heard for miles. Sure enough I heard a response coming from below us. I looked down the mountainside.
Far below, I saw people and right in front stood Fred, I recognised him on account of his paunch. I waved to him and he waved back. Then he pointed to something. I looked. It was a plane wreck! Fred and his passengers were involved in a rescue. I ran back to the bus and told my passengers. They needed no persuading and got down from the bus immediately. I pointed out the wreck to them. They ran down as a body and I had to hurry to join them.
Down at the wreck, Fred had things well organised. That was no wonder, the man had spent more than thirty years in the army as a Logistic NCO. It just happened that the crash had happened in a desolate place where no one was about. Fred explained that they had actually seen the plane go down. A passing motorist had gone to call for help and the passengers had rushed down to do what they could.
We managed to get a lot of people out before the Fire Brigade and the Civil Defence people arrived. One of our passengers was a nurse and she took charge to provide first aid to as many people as she could. The rest of us did whatever seemed proper. We managed to take out about fifty passengers. After the Civil Defence got organised, we helped to evacuate the injured to the road, where our buses were. Since there were not enough ambulances, our buses were used to ferry the not seriously injured to the hospital.
In spite of all our hopes and tears and hard work,we could save only about half the victims. Most of them perished. We said a prayer. Back in the bus I had to console a crying Fred. He was so upset because he had seen a few dead children charred beyond recognition.I tried my best to explain to him that he had done his best and that there was nothing more he could do.Finally, he got into the bus and drove his passengers away. I climbed into mine and met a group of stolid, silent passengers. The rescue operation had affected all of us. We knew that we would remember all those suffering faces all our lives. But along with those thoughts would also be the thoughts that we had saved a few of them.
