The River Of Life

For centuries the river had fed the people who lived along its banks. It was a long river that meandered for a few hundred miles and it was filled with water all the year round. It ran through two countries which had been at peace for centuries. People from both the countries practically worshipped the river. Many villages dotted its banks. As a benevolent mother provides love and food for all her children, the river provided all the people with everything they needed. The farmers depended on it for irrigating their fields, because it only rained for a few months in the countries. In fact, the river was the life giver for both the countries.
Then one day a party of ambitious politicians came to power in the country which had the source of the river within its borders. Almost immediately they began clamouring to dam the river. They made it known that by damming the river, the country could have more of the river water. There was no need to worry because what they were doing was within their rights. Some of the fairer minded people protested mildly that it would affect the country which was further down. The politicians waved aside the protests saying that every country had to take care of itself. Here was a chance for them to be immensely rich and they were talking about other people! In the end everyone thought it was a good idea.
Without further delay, they dammed the river. The project was treated as top priority so within a few years the dam was up. Immediately it brought up a wave of protests from the other country. They just woke up one moming and found that they had to beg for water from their neighbours. A series of talks were held. The country which had laid the dam held that if the other wanted water, it should pay for the removal of the dam and the water after that. The argument was that it was “their”water. Naturally this was not acceptable to the country which was a victim.
After all talks had broken down, war was declared.Almost immediately, a few thousand soldiers were killed on both sides. Again and again, the country which had lost its river attacked. Because of the anger that the soldiers had, they were more successful. In time, the dam itself came under their control. Only then did the country which started it all make demands for peace. Other countries of the world too began to get involved. But it took all of four years before peace came to be.Concerned countries made the country which created the dam give a serious undertaking that it would never again dam the river for its own use, without consulting the other.
The sad thing was that more than a hundred thousand lives were lost. All because of one selfish act.
