Mr. Benjamin Low, 46, does not look like a hero ot all. In fact you can tell, just by looking at him, that he is the type who would avoid excitement at all cost,Yet he had been entirely responsible for the saving of two lives. Mr. Low is a bookkeeper working for a large printing firm along the Kallang River. He likes to sit at the river bank during his lunch.
On the day in question, Mr. Low was quietly sitting by the river listening to music and eating his home-made sandwiches. He heard a couple quarrelling not far from where he was sitting. It was a young couple and the quarrel sounded like a typical one, between two emofionally involved persons. Mr. Low decided to ignore them and closed his eyes. But soon he found that they could not be ignored. The noise was a little too much.
He took a look and got a shock. The girl was trying to jump into the river and the man was trying to stop her. Finally he managed to persuade her and they walked away. Mr. Low shook his head and went back to his music. The he heard the man screaming, “Stop! Please stop!” Mr. Low jerked his head and saw the girl running towards the river. Before he could say anything, right in front of his eyes, the girl plunged in. The young man stood screaming for a while and then he too plunged in. Mr. Low raced to the river’s edge and saw that both of them were drowning!
Without any thought he dived in and grabbed the girl and swam back to the bank with powerful strokes,As he reached the bank, a few people helped to drag the girl out. Then Mr. Low went in search of the man.He was nowhere in sight. A member of the crowd pointed to where the man had disappeared. Mr. Low dived. The crowd held its breath and waited. Suddenly Mr. Low emerged, dragging the unconscious victim. The crowd broke into wild cheers. Back on the bank, someone proceeded to apply mouth to mouth resuscitation.Meanwhile the girl was hysterical, and had to be comforted by an elderly woman in the crowd. Both the victims were sent to hospital in an ambulance and Mr. Low went back to his office – in his wet clothes.
A week later, the Minister of Home Affairs held a partly to honour Mr. Low. The minister sang his praises. It was surprising that the great hero trembled with stage fright when asked to make a speech. All he could say was “Thank you”.
