The School Swimming Carnival

In the month of May last year, our school held our first Swimming Carnival. It was held at the Toa Payoh Swimming Complex. About two months before the carnival, our P.E.teacher encouraged to sign up for the carnival. I did not sign up because I am not a good swimmer. However, about ten of my classmates signed up for the various events.

The Swimming Carnival started at 2.00 p.m. sharp. Most of us were already at the swimming complex by 1.00 p.m.The first few events were individual events. Most of my classmates were taking part in the individual events. The most exciting was the Upper Primary Boys’ 50 metres event.The event took a very short time, and the winner was one of my classmates.

After the individual events, we had the team events.The team events were like relay events, where a team of four competitors took turns to swim fifty metres each. There were both boys’ and girls’ teams but the team events were only open to the upper primary students. My class came in first for the boys’ team, and second for the girls’ team. We were very thrilled and we cheered wildly for our classmates.

The lower primary pupils were not left out of the Swimming Carnival either. Instead of swimming, they took part in float competitions. An upper primary pupil was paired off with a lower primary pupil who sat on a float. The floats were huge.They were colourful and they came in different animal shapes.The upper primary pupils had to push the floats assigned to them. Whoever reached the finishing line first became the winner.

The lower primary pupils have to wear life jackets to protect them if the floats they sat on happen to capsize Also, all the lower primary pupils who were taking part mus,know how to swim. We did not expect any capsizing to happen. However, one of the floats did capsize. The float that capsized was the elephant-shaped one in the second lane. The boy who was sitting on the float was very hyperactive – he could not sit still. The upper primary boy who was pushing him was having a really hard time trying to calm him. Unfortunately, before he could calm him down, the upper primary pupil lost control of the float and the float capsized. The hyperactive boy fell with a splash into the water.

All of us who were spectators let out a loud murmur of concern. The judges quickly blew the whistle to stop the race and some teachers jumped into the water to make sure both the competitors were alright. Everyone sighed with relief when we discovered that both boys were fine. Because of the capsize, the float event had to be re-started again.The hyperactive boy was replaced by one of his classmates.This time, the event went on smoothly.

The Swimming Carnival soon came to an end. There was a short prize-giving ceremony for all winners. My class was the champion class. We cheered wildly because we were so happy. Although I did not take part in any of the events, I really enjoyed the Swimming Carnival and I hope I would be able to take part in an event in the future.
