Randy sat, glumly on a park bench waiting for his friend John to show up. After a considerable amount of time, John finally showed up. While Randy was just twelve years old. John was thirty years his senior. That wasn’t a problem for Randy for he loved the comical and entertaining way he spokes.
Though Randy smiled when greeting him, the elder man sensed sadness around Randy. “Let me guess,” said John. “You received your report card and the results stink!” said John humorously. That remark produced a reluctant smile on Randy’s face.
“I got all border line passes while my friend Jason received top marks.” complained Randy. ” I’ll never be clever.”’ said Randy tearfully. John was thoughtful for some time. He then leaned over to Randy and put his arm around him.
“Shall I tell you a secret which would make you just as, smart as Jason?” whispered John. "If you practice this secret wherever you go and whatever you do, you would be the smartest and sharpest person in no time!” Randy’s face lit up
“Please tell me, implored Randy, his heart beating excitedly. ”Whatever could this amazing secret be?” thought John to himself.
John slowly and elaborately informed him that the secret to excelling in anything be it studies or work was to concentrate,” finished John. When Randy heard that, he felt like a tyre, which had had its air let out. Randy was so disappointed. He had thought that the secret would have been something grand and unique, which no one would have known. In the end, it was something common which his teachers would repeat themselves hoarse all the time. Pay attention. Concentrate!
The following week, after a one weak break, Randy was back in school. As usual he was busy daydreaming when he suddenly remembered John’s words. ’Concentrate!’ - the word kept swimming in his head, Against his will, he did do just that. So for the first time he started to really listen to what his teacher was teaching. The following day he did the same. As time passed, it became a habit for Randy to concentrate.
Soon, Randy was handing in well-written assignments and test papers, much to the delight of his teachers. By paying attention to what the teachers had to say, he began to understand his lessons better.
One fine day, two months later, Randy handed his report card to John. He had scored A’s in all of his subjects.
