The Time I Ran Away

It has never been my habit to take advice from onyone. From an early age, I had cultivated the habit of thinking independently and acting on my own de.cisions. So on that particular occasion when my friend’s mother offered me the piece of advice, I smiled politely but acted as I wanted to – against the advice.

Mrs. Lim was Maureen’s mother. I used to go to Maureen’s house frequently and got to know her mother pretty well. She was a middle-aged lady and very motherly. She saw the sad look on my face and took me aside ond asked me what was biting me. I said nothing was,but Maureen plunged in and told her everything; I was planning to run away. Mrs. Lim just said one thing: Don’t!She described her own experience of running away from home and how she sùffered. I tried to justify my intention by explaining to her that I was very unhappy at home.No one understood me and so on. But she kept repeating her advice. Finally to stop her continuous stream of advice, I told her that I would go home. I didn’t. That night I ran away.

I was afraid of being alone so I wen to the only place I knew where there would be people all night long:the airport. I was right, there were a lot of people. For once in my life I felt free. No Mum to nag me; no Dad with his well-meaning advice and no young pesky brother of mine to mess up my things. The time dragged on to midnight. This was the first time in my life where I had been away from home this late, without anyone knowing where I was. I felt happy that everyone would be worried by now. A few foreigners – men – tried to pick me up. I threatened to call the police and they left me alone after that.

The time dragged on to 1:00 a.m. and then 2:00 and 3:00. I felt tired and dozed away sitting on a chair I felt a cramp and woke up suddenly and then I felt stiff all over. I looked around. There were still a lot of people about, but no one cared. The sight of a teenager falling asleep at the airport arrival hall, was obviously a common occurrence. I decided to take a walk to the wash room. I felt lonely. Then I admitted the thought that I had been trying to cast out of my mind for the past three hours: I missed home. I missed my bed, my mother, my father and even that little pest.

I looked longingly at the phone. I fought back the impulse to call my mother and tell her where I was.I knew that my knight in shinning armour – my father- would be there in minutes, if he knew where I was. Then my thoughts went back to the incidents that had lead me to take this drastic decision. I realised that Mrs.Lim was right. I was being petty. What happened was common in every family. This was life. I just had to adjust myself a little to the world, instead of always expecting everyone to adjust themselves to me. I sat down and thought about what I had done. Then I decided that I would wait for dawn to break and then call Dad.

Just then I heard a smalt voice calling my name.It was my little brother. He was running and calling out to me. Behind him was my father, running with my mother close behind. I guess Maureen must have told them; she was the only one who knew my plans.

I certainly wished that I had taken her mother’s advice.
