The Woes Of A Shopper Whose Bag Burst Open

One late morning, a shopper, Peter, was carrying a food-laden bag. He trudged wearily along the clean pavement and was soon passing a factory premises. All of a sudden, his bag burst open as it was overloaded. There was a big gaping hole and its contents were spilled onto the pavement. The food comprised a chunk of salted fish, tomatoes, three kilograms of lean pork, coffee powder loosely packed and wrapped in a newspaper, fresh eggs, a live hen, squids, yams, bean curd, garlic and onions. He was at wits’ end. Just at this time, a large number of uniformed male and female workers were streaming out of the factory gate. It was lunch-time. Most of them were heading for the food centre down the pavement. Seconds later, there was a commotion as workers slipped and fell like tenpins. Obviously they did not take much notice of what were strewn on the pavement. They were anxious to secure seats in that food centre where a wide range of Chinese, Malay and Indian food were available. The prices were reasonable. Service was friendly and prompt.

At this juncture, Peter was alarmed and raced to help some employees to their feet. The pavement was littered with food. It was unsightly and posed a hazard to pedestrians. Some injured victims flew into a rage and wanted to vent their anger on Peter. A burly watchman from it the factory stepped out and intervened. He stopped these unruly victims from laying hands on the culprit, Peter. They blamed him for their misfortune. As the day wore on, Peter and the kind watchman were able to clear the mess on the pavement. The menace was removed at last.
