The Wolf Girls

The manager of an orphanage, Reverend J.L. Singh was told about ‘ghosts’ in an ant-hill one day. That evening, he went with some friends to hide themselves behind a huge tree which was not very far from the ant-hill. Soon, they spotted two creatures crawling out of the ant-hill. However, they were not ghosts. They were wolves.

The next morning, Reverend J.L. Singh ordered his workers to dig up the ant-hill. To their shock, they discovered two girls inside; one about eight years old and the other was rather small. She was about one year old.

Reverend J.L. Singh and his wife sent the two ‘wolf girls”to the orphanage. They then named them Amala and Kamala,They decided to bring them up as human beings.

It was of course not an easy task. At first, the two girls refused to wear any clothes. Their favourite food was meat, raw one in particular. Most of the time they could not stand and sit properly but would move on their all fours. During the day, they liked to sleep while at night they prowled around. They did not make any friends at the orphanage but often mixed with dogs,cats, goats or cows.

Gradually, they began to accept their new life. They started approaching others. Amala, the older one, even volunteered to help others to do some household chores.

Then, just a year after their capture, Amala died. Her sister, Kamala cried for the first time ever. Without her sister, Kamala behaved more like a human being. She began to make friends with others and was able to use about 40 words. Sadly, she died when she was only 10 years old.
