There Are Kind Humans In This World

It was a kindness done long ago and not even done to me, but to my father. Yet, I felt strongly that I had to repay it. My father used to talk about it on and on. He had been stranded on a lonely Malaysian road at night. His car had run out of petrol. Suddenly a group of toughs had surrounded him; their intention was clear – robbery. Then an old Malay man had appeared out of nowhere. Obviously he was a community leader. As soon as he had appeared, the toughs had disappeared. Yet the old man had not said a word.After that the old man had invited my father to spend the night in his home. Next morning the old man had sent a youth to get some petrol and then had sent my father on his way, but only after a delicious breakfast.The old man had refused the money that my father had tried to give him. When my father insisted on repaying the kindness the old man had laughingly said that he would appreciate a bunch of ‘lychees’ the next time my father came around that way.

For some reason, my father never went that way again and so never had the chance to repay the kindness to the old man, though he talked about his intention.When my father died suddenly, I took it upon myself to try seek out the old man and repay the kindness. As soon as I was old enough, I drove through the same road again. Based on my father’s descriptions, I found the landmarks. It was not difficult for everyone I met was happy to guide me. Finally, I found the village and asked around.

As my father had forgotten the old man’s name,I had only his description to go by. I was taken to one old man after another where I recounted the incident which had happened more than ten years ago. Everyone nodded kindly, but no one remembered the incident.Then I met a young man who seemed to remember.He had been a boy when it happened. The old man was Datok Ali, his grandfather and had been the village bomoh or natural healer. Then he gave me the sad news;his grandfather was no more in this world. I was disappointed and gave him the bunch of lychees I had brought. He accepted the fruits happily, laughed and said that his grandfather believed that all men are brothers under the fatherhood of God. Thus he did not really expect anything in return for a kindness. I thanked him and asked to see the old man’s grave. The elders then explained that it was contrary to their religion, and to good reason, to thank a body. They believed that the man who helped my father was not in a grave but had gone to a better place.

Checkmated at every point, I finally saw their view and realised that I was making a big fuss over nothing.Helping people in distress came as naturally as breathing to these simple people. They simply forgot all about it after they had helped someone. In fact they expressed surprise when I told them that not everyone thought in that way. They escorted me to my car and after shaking all their hands I got into my car and drove off. “Thanks Datok Ali,” I whispered to the wind and drove away,realising that I had been wrong all along. There are still kind humans left in the world.
