Three Seamen Saved After One Week At Sea

It was a moonlit night when a fishing trawler steamed out of the harbour. It carried a crew of eleven seamen and a British-born skipper. It was bound for the South China Sea where fishes, squids and lobsters abound. It would take them two days to reach their destination. Halfway,the vessel ran aground and broke up on the submerged reef when it ran into a typhoon. The skipper and eight seamen perished in the choppy waters; the food and water supplies were lost in the mishap. Three able-bodied seamen, Tom, Thomas and George, were bobbing in the wind-swept sea. They clung to some floating planks as heavy rain lashed them. Moments later, they were tossed by huge waves as they held on to the planks for dear life. Soon they drifted away as a strong current swept them off.

As dawn came, the weather had calmed. Weary and exhausted, they had no inkling of their present predicament. They had fallen asleep most of the time. They soon awoke and peered into their vicinity. It was nothing but a vast expanse of water. Tom spoke feebly, “I’m hungry.” Thomas and George looked weak. Soon a raft passed by them. They clambered on it with relief. Filled with pangs of hunger, they laid their bare hands on any sea creatures which came by. They caught four tishes and ate them raw. For drinking water, they depended on the rain. They cupped their hands to hold the rainwater and then quenched their dying thirst.

When they were rescued by a passing cargo ship, they had already spent a week at sea. They were badly sunburned, dehydrated and exhausted.
