Tornadoes

One of the most intense periods of tornado strikes in North America was in April 1974. Within a space of eight days, 100 tornadoes formed -racing across the landscape, cutting a path of destruction from Alabama in the south to Ontario in Canada. A total of 324 people were killed and 4000 more people were injured. Some were killed by sand and gravel, which had been sucked up by the tornadoes, striking people like bullets. Some were torn to pieces or hit by flying objects. Others were stabbed by wheat straws that sliced into them like darts. After the tornadoes, such straws were found driven deep into the trunks of the trees.

Although many people had been killed, some luckier people and animals were lifted by the tornadoes and put down some distance away, totally unharmed.

The worst hit towns were Xenia, Ohio and Bradendurg, Kentucky. Nradendurg was a small farming town of 1600 people. The town had never experienced a tornado before and its inhabitants were totally unprepared for the disaster. In the five-minute strike, a tornado smashed through the town, killing twenty-nine people and injured many more. Most of the dead were children who had been playing outside the school. Three quarters of the buildings were destroyed. Eye-witnesses spoke of cars, people and even horses flying through the air. The disaster ripped the heart out of the small community and many of the survivors left and never returned.
