Trapped in a Lift

One morning, my brother and I returned home from school. We got into the lift, followed by our neighbour, Uncle Lee and an old lady.

As the lft was reaching the fourth floor, it suddenly stopped with a jerk. We thought that the lift had reached the fourth floor, so we crowded near the door, preparing to get out. After a few seconds, the door had not opened. We started pressing the ‘open’ button hard. The door was still tightly closed it made us panic with fright. The lift was stuck between the third and fourth floor.

My brother was almost in tears. Mr Lee went to the door and started banging and shouting, hoping that someone would hear us, but it was in vain.

Luckily, a small gap between the lift door let some light pass through, which made the lift brighter. The old lady was praying, hoping to get saved. After about thirty minutes, we heard a little sound outside, which brightened us up. Then, the lift gave some jerks. Next, the door was forced open by a metal object.

“Phew!” I sighed. Then, I realized that someone was asleep! It was my brother. I was amused by his loud snoring. I woke him up at once. We were very grateful to people from the Civil Defence. When my brother and I reached home, we found that it was already six!

Mum questioned us about what had happened and why we were so late. We told her about the incident and she reprimanded us for not walking up the stairs as she had told us before. After all, our house was only on the fourth floor.
