Trying To Appease A Disgruntled Customer

It was a sunny morning. The scene was a coastal village. A truck rumbled by a roadside makeshift food stall, sending smoke and dust swirling towards the customers. The stall was packed with construction workers and labourers who were due out to eke out a living. A bird in a cage fluttered noisily in flight while customers were sipping their hot drinks and munching their meat buns and seemed oblivious to the health hazard. Some feathers fell onto a customer’s glass of hot coffee. A burly, heavily-tattooed labourer, in his late forties, was annoyed and flung the hot coffee at the bird, sending it squawking and in flight. The other customers stopped their meals abruptly and in apprehension, and looked up.

At this juncture, the owner of the bird, a carrot cake hawker, Mr.Lee, rushed over on hearing the commotion. “Calm down, calm down What is the matter?” Mr. Lee asked apologetically. The enraged customer seized hold of Mr. Lee after learning that the bird belonged to him. “Its feathers fell onto my drink. I flew into a rage. Mind you, I’ve to rush to work in ten minutes’ time.”

Mr. Lee took a piece of damp cloth and started wiping away the coffee stains on the disgruntled customer’s shirt and collar, “My apology It’s a freak incident,” Mr. Lee tried to appease the visibly upset customer, ”I could have smashed the cage to smithereens and strangled the bird,” the customer’s voice was rising. The hawker pleaded with the enraged customer to spare his bird, “Please do not do any harm to my bird. In normal circumstances the bird perches on the wooden support in the cage and remains quiet. Something must have frightened it out of its wits.”

A minute later, the disgruntled customer stormed out of the food stall in disgust!
