One bright morning, a truck driver, Alex, and his assistant, Joe, was travelling on a dusty, narrow road in Northern Africa. The vehicle was carrying a load of maize for the famine-stricken residents of a town. All of a sudden, vultures were seen circling over them. Minutes earlier, they were in high spirits. They would be rewarded handsomely after they had completed their task. Their mission had to be fulfilled at all costs. They never expected their joy to be short-lived.
At this juncture, Alex sensed something amiss. It was a bad omen. He lamented, “There must be corpses or carcasses ahead of them. A tribal war where hundreds were slaughtered? A massacre of wild animals to reduce their numbers?” Joe chipped in, “No one can predict.” short distance away, more and more ugly-looking vultures appeared, much to their apprehension. The smell of death seemed to be close. They shook their heads sadly and wanted to investigate. When they reached the scene, what they saw really shocked them. It was a ghastly sight. They were frightened out of their wits. Five hundred cattle were strewn all over a wide area near a dry waterhole. They must have died for lack of food and water. The vultures were having a happy time feasting on them. The stench was unbearable. They sped off and dared not look back. Never in their lives had they ever seen such a great number of wild animals lying dead over a wide area!
Two hours later, they reached the outskirts of the mining town. Peering through the windscreen, Alex saw no sigh of life. There was an eerie silence. It was formerly a bustling town with a population of ten thousand. They sped off without any further delay. When they reached the town, they saw nothing but corpses everywhere. All the inhabitants lay sprawling on the dusty ground. They showed no sign of life. Alex and Joe burst into tears on seeing such a horrifying sight. They came too late to save these famine-stricken inhabitants.
