Unfortunate children

The work was hard, it was very hot, but everyone was exceptionally cheerful. I think most of them were thinking of all the little smiling faces that were running in and out trying to help, but making perfect nuisances of themselves. All of a sudden, we seemed to have found forty little brothers and sisters each.

Our whole class was on a project to help the Bukit Timah Children’s Home. We were helping them to clear the area for a field. As can be expected the children,boys and girls aged 7 to 12, wanted to help. They were tireless and giving a hand everywhere, but mostly getting in the way.

I was amazed at the amount of love these unfortunate little ones could give. One boy who particularly impressed me was nine year old Daniel. I asked his story was we worked together trying to flatten a large mound.Suddenly he became sad. I put my arm around him and he just leaned on me and sobbed. Then he began his story.

He remembers his parents only vaguely. He has a younger sister also in the same home and pointed her out to me. His father was a hopeless drunk and never took care of the family. His mother worked and supported them. He remembers his father beating his mother ever day. His mother use to cry late into the night.Once the neighbours were so upset they called the police.His father was arrested but was released the next day because his mother did not want to complain to the police about the beatings. This made his father even braver. He continued with the beatings until one day,his mother ran away from home.

When his father saw that his wife was not around,he drank even more and started to beat the children.Daniel showed me the scars on his legs where his father had burnt him with cigarettes, when he was just four years old. Then one day, Daniel’s aunt had visited them and noticed the burnt marks. She got very angry. First she took him to a doctor and then she reported the matter to the police. Daniel’s father was arrested and later sentenced to jail for six years. Now he was in jail.

As for his mother, no one had seen her since she let home. Tears sprang into my eyes as I looked down at the pitiful little boy in front of me. I looked around at the other children as they ran about. I wondered what sad story each one had. I thought of my own life. How fortunate I was! Here I was grumbling at my mother and father over little things like what programme to watch on TV and there was Daniel who was separated from both his parents.

I hugged him closely to me. Then I wiped his tears and told him not to worry. I told him that his mother would surely come to look for him. His father too would change when he came out of prison.

Daniel looked into my eyes. “Will they?” he seemed to ask. Then I told him that from that day I would be his elder sister. I gave him my telephone number with instructions to call me whenever he liked. I also promised to visit him once every week.
