Watermelons

Once upon a time, there were aboriginal people living in a countryside in South Africa. They did not receive much education Every morning, they woke up very early to plough their fields and to harvest fruits from the fruit trees which they had grown. They did this for a living and they did the same routine day in and day out.

One day, while one of the workers was threshing the rice plants, he discovered a strange-looking object among the crops in the farm. The news spread as quick as lightning and soon all the natives gathered around the strange-looking object.

Everybody thought that it was a monster. So, they screamed and yelled. Most of them swore that they had’never seen such a funny-looking object before. Suddenly, a man opened the gate to the farm.

He walked in with a sword and cut the fruit. Red juice flowed out. The natives were frightened and thought that it was blood. The foreigner cut out a piece of the object and ate it first. He did this just to show that it was edible. As he could hardly communicate with the natives, they thought that he was eating a human being. So, they used twigs, strong branches, stones and others to chase him away.

Another foreigner entered the farm. He could communicate well with them. He told them that the fruit was edible. He took a piece of the object and gave it a bite. Later, he passed the fruit around. Everybody tasted the fruit and they looked very pleased with it. In the end, he gave some seeds to everyone. He told them that the fruit was ‘Watermelon’ and that it could be grown from seeds.

The fruit is now not strange to the natives anymore. Everyone is growing watermelons in their farms.
