What a party!

“Be sure to be there on time!” reminded Sabrina as she waved us goodbye and left the classroom.

“No problem,” I shouted at the retreating figure and Belinda who was seated beside me, echoed me.

Sabrina, our classmate and buddy would be flying back to Australia for the June holidays. Her parents who were expatriates in Singapore had kindly agreed to throw a party at their place. This was planned so as to thank Sabrina’s classmates for helping her to adjust to her school life here.

It was typical of Sabrina to tap on her creativity to make the party a unique one. She requested all guests to be dressed in a way that would be different from their daily attire. She left it to our ingenious minds to decide on that, stating that there were no restrictions in any way.

That evening, Belinda and I reached Sabrina’s place early. We were dressed as elves! Giggling away,we helped to lay the food. There were roast duck with lychee and ginger sauce, omelette with chives, grilled tomato with venison, broiled mushrooms and buttered noodles just to name a few.

“What an inviting spread!” said Belinda irresistibly as she eyed the apple strudel. We felt every urge to try each dish as we brought them out from the kitchen.

There was an air of excitement, as we waited in anticipation for the arrival of the guests. As they arrived,they were greeted with expressions of surprise and much laughter. Among them was Anthony, the clown in our class who came in dressed as a jester in Shakespeare’s fime. We giggled helplessly as we ushered him in for he did resemble onel Justice, the popular dreamer in class sailed in proudly as an air-stewardess. A few started teasing her that she would have to serve all of us with the food later on. There was also Benny who had often claimed to be poor and he came in tattered clothes!His beggar suit “confirms” his financial status after all!We laughingly added that we should have all joined the Drama Club in school with such convincing outfits.to the buffet table for a great tuck in! The atmosphere was relaxed and cozy; everyone chattered happily away.We then played a number of games and a few ones were sabotaged. Poor Anthony and Justice ended up having to sing us a song.

When everyone had finally arrived, we proceeded

Just as they had finished their presentation, a flying cockroach came in through the window. Its entrance was sudden and caught everyone by surprise.

“A flying cockroach,” screamed timid Alicia and with tacit understanding, almost all the girls rushed out of the room. The few boys were forced to remain in the room to deal with the unwelcome intruder. Plucking up their courage, however little they might have, Benny and the others used a rolled up newspaper to hit it.

The girls peeped in from the door, fearful but eager to know the outcome. Luckily, the cockroach landed on the floor for a while and Benny lost no time in smashing it. There were shouts of ‘hooray’ from everyone and sighs of relief from the girls.

We resumed our games after the heroic act. All of us enjoyed those hours of interaction and found the party most exciting and enjoyable.
