What about me?

Tom could not tolerate it any longer. That very morning he went to Mr. Lim, the General Manager and tendered his resignation.

Earlier he agonised at what to put into his letter.”Thank you for all the help this organisation has given me,” he wrote. The statement sounded false and sarcastic. He tried again, “I have learnt a lot from this organisation.” Then he realised that the organisation had stopped teaching him anything a long time ago. In the end he decided this statement as the most honest and to the point, “I wish to tender my resignation effective today giving one month’s notice.”

He knocked on Mr. Lim’s door at 10:00 a.m. after Mr. Lim’s daily morning meeting with his supervisors.”Come in,” said Mr. Lim.

“Could you read this please?” Tom said as he handed the letter to Mr. Lim and walked out of the office.

Mr. Lim summoned him ten minutes later. “So you have decided to leave us Tom, after working here for twenty years,” said Mr. Lim in a surprised tone.

“Yes, I have decided to do something else with my life, Mr. Lim,” said Tom.

“I wish you all the best, Tom,” replied Mr. Lim.”You will miss your long service award due in two months time.”

“I know that Mr. Lim,” said Tom in a flat voice and walked out. Ignoring Mr. Lim’s outstretched hand,Tom was glad it was over, Mr. Lim had not even urged him to reconsider. Should he have expected anything else?

Tom went back to his cubicle where he had spent twenty years of his working life and put his head in his hands. He thought of what he was going to tell May,his wife. He realised that he had not discussed the matter with her.

Tom’s mind went over the last three years where he had lost so many chances of being promoted. The first year, Devi who was junior to him by three years had been promoted to Senior Clerk. Then in the next year Susan who was also junior to him by five years was promoted. His greatest humiliation, however, occurred only a month ago. The new clerk Tan Kah whom he had trained for over a year had been promoted to Senior Clerk. It was the last straw for Tom. Tom knew his other five fellow clerks were sniggering at him behind his back. They were probably saying, “Poor Tom, twenty years and still not promoted.” He realised that at least Devi and Susan had worked there for some time but Tan Kah had worked there for only a year!

Tom was shocked and disgusted that Tan Kah had been promoted. He had just worked himself into becoming Mr. Lim’s favourite. Tan Kah bought Mr. Lim breakfast everyday and took him out to lunch on those days when Mr. Lim did not have lunch appointments.Tan Kah had even sent Mr. Lim home when he was drunk after last year’s dinner and dance. Tom realised that he could have played the same game. Tom would probably have done it better than Tan Kah. However,Tom’s principles would not allow him to butter up to anyone, even his boss Mr. Lim. His father had always taught him that hard work and dedication was what got you promoted. It was what got you promoted in other organisations but not this one, Tom thought. After bearing the shame and humiliation for several years he had enough: He decided to value his self-respect.
