Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Multi Racial Society

The concept of a few races of people living together is a comparatively new one in the world. For thousands, perhaps millions, of years the world had been divided by races and subdivided into groups which spoke languages or dialects. Races of people began to live together only a few centuries ago. At first there was a lot of suspicion and the living together was reluctant. Then the idea gradually began to be accepted.

The advantages of multi-racial living is that first of all, it leads to a richer life. For example in multi-racial Singapore, it is possible to enjoy so many cultures. There is opportunity to learn from each other and enrich one’s own culture by taking the best from the others. In Singapore it is possible to see a Chinese version of Ramayana and an Indian dance drama based on Madame White Snake. This would not have been possible in single race communities like China or India.

Multi-racial countries, like Singapore and Malaysia, are a world in miniature. When people learn to live with many races and see the good in each of them, it is easier to get along with other countries of the world. The suspicions that scem so natural between members of different races disappear after a few generations.

The disadvantages are few but do exist. A multiracial society needs a special type of government to run it. If run without due consideration, a potential time bomb is created. It is easy for government to overlook the sentiments of one group and pass laws which favour another group. When this happens, there will be trouble if not immediately, in the long run.

It is also expensive for the government to take care of all the races in a multi-racial country. Whereas if there is a single race, and perhaps one religion as well, the government has to think only in one direction. In Singapore for example we see that the government has to spend diversely in building different places of prayer for the different religions, emphasise education of different groups and so on.

My opinion is that the advantages of a multi racial society far outweighs the disadvantages. It is a premonition of how the world will be in the very near future.
