With the introduction of new models of devices, more people are able to get their

hands on such devices. Although some may agree that digital devices are necessary in

our daily lives, these devices also cause us to distance ourselves from our families and

cause us to over-rely on them. In this prevalent age of technology, there are more

websites and applications that are being introduced to us. Therefore, I will be weighing

the advantages and the disadvantages of digital devices in our daily lives.

One disadvantage of using digital devices in our daily lives would be that digital

devices cause us to be over reliant on them, such as having conversations online

instead of face to face talks. Social media applications that can be found on most

digital devices like Instagram and Facebook have caused us to rely on them so much to

have interactions with the people around us because they constantly add new and

interesting features to entice people to use them more often. Due to this over-reliance

on digital devices, people tend to forget about having face to face interactions with the

people around them to actually experience the real meaning of social interaction instead

of being stuck behind their phone screens. With these interactions, the relationships

between people become weaker and they start to drift away from each other. Research

has shown that most people, especially the youths today treasure and cherish online

interactions over social interactions as they found it awkward to have conversations

with people offline and found they had to continue conversations without using the

features that such digital devices provide to them to be able to continue the

conversation. Youths thus have not been able to socialise much as their lives start to

revolve around these digital devices. There has also been an increase in people who use

their phone while having dinner at the table and would rather message the person sitting

across them than actually conversing with them. Therefore, people have been

over-relying on digital devices stuck in their own "digital prisons".

Another disadvantage of using digital devices in our daily lives would be that no

matter what websites or applications we use on our devices, there is no privacy and our

lives have been made public without us even knowing. In this growing age of

technology, there have been many engineers and technicians working on how they could

find out more about us, to be able to increase the use of their applications. Countries'

research and experiments on many different types of applications have shown that such

apps are able to access our devices' cameras and microphone without asking for our

permission. One example of this would be the Taobao app. Experiments have shown

that whenever the researchers were speaking of something that they wished to buy, the

app would access the device's microphone and take note of that particular product and the next thing you know, that product would appear in your shopping cart. Another

example would be the Instagram app. Researchers have uncovered that this app

actually saves whatever pictures you have taken into their databases and keeps it there

to recommend your account to many different people worldwide. Although there is no

knowing what they do with all our personal details, there has already been a breach of

privacy when the pictures are stored in their databases. Thus, the usage of digital

devices has made our lives public without our permission, leading to a lack of privacy.

However, as many disadvantages there are, there are also many benefits in using

such digital devices. One advantage of using digital devices in our daily lives would be

that information is accessible and allows us to acquire information easily. Especially

during the pandemic, it has enabled us to learn as schools have closed but with

countless apps, remote learning has been made easier for all of us. The advent of this

sudden change is made accessible with the tap of the keyboard and a click of a button.

These digital devices serve as a library of resources with an array of different websites

to choose from, facilitating our learning. Apps like Zoom and Google classroom that

can be found in our own digital devices are very useful for teenagers like me to acquire

new notes despite physically not being in school. Even though the introduction of Home

Based Learning was a sudden change for me, apps like Zoom have certainly made my

life better and I can become less worried about my learning. With the introduction of

new interactive features into my daily work and learning, it has made learning more fun

for us and we are able to learn more effectively and efficiently. Therefore, digital devices

have shown to be important stepping stones for all to learn better especially when

remote learning is required.

Another advantage of using digital devices in our daily lives would be that these

digital devices provide a well-deserved break for people who may be feeling too worked

up and stressed from work or school. There is a huge variety of content on the internet

and digital platforms such that it caters to the likes of many different people. As you

scroll through the different apps and watch the content videos that creators make, it

would definitely take your mind off your worries and make you forget about what is

stressing you. It can be seen that more people are starting to rely on such social media

apps to provide them with stress-relief as they consider such apps as their safe haven.

The numbers of such people have been increasing everyday and results have shown

that there have been over 1 billion downloads for both TikTok and Instagram apps

combined, to date. By relying on such videos, some others might even be inspired to

make their own videos, while some others might also find that they are able to relate to

people they see online and thus they would feel comforted knowing they are not alone.

Therefore, the usage of digital devices has served as a safe place for people to relax

and feel like they are part of a bigger society when viewing videos addressing issues

they can relate to.

In conclusion, I think that the disadvantages of using digital devices outweigh its

advantages as over-reliance and the lack of privacy has resulted in the lack of self

discipline. Even though some of us might be able to relax in the digital space, without

adequate self control, we are not able to prevent ourselves from becoming addicted,

resulting in being trapped in a "digital prison".
