Poverty

It has been stated by researchers that there is no shortage of anything on planet earth. In fact we have plenty of everything. Some have estimated that there is enough building material on earth to build a palace for every family in the world, enough food to feed everyone for their entire lives, and to clothe them in the finest clothes possible. Yet we find poor people in every country. In even the richest country in the world — the USA - there are millions of homeless people starving to death in the streets. How does all this happen?

It is easy to blame circumstances and geography. Though it is true that some countries of the world have more resources than others, it is also true that in even Countries without any resources — like in Singapore — there are rich and poor people. It is logical to ask that if some people in a country can get rich why can’t all Of them? Yet even in the richest countries in the world there are poor people and in the poorest countries there are rich people.

People who have researched into what causes poverty have come forward with views that people are poor because of attitudes. First of all they believe that they cannot become rich. This belief keeps them from breaking out of the poverty trap – and indeed it is a trap. Since they begin with the belief that they cannot be rich, they tend to remain poor. They do not do anything to get themselves out of their circumstances because they are comfortable being poor. Also, in many countries the national philosophies keep insisting that it is a virtue to be poor. Connected with this is the belief that it is bad to be rich We all notice that the villains in most movies are rich men. With such thoughts keeping people down, it is no wonder that there is poverty every where.

To strike at the heart of the problem, it seems that the best thing to do would be to declare war on people’s attitudes.
