What steps would you take to keep your house free of insect and animal pests.

KEEP YOUR HOUSE FREE OF INSECT AND ANIMAL PESTS

The subject of keeping insect and animal pests out of the house is not as easy as it seems to be at first consideration. In the scheme of things these are creatures which are equipped by nature to present a lot of resistance to all efforts to destroy them or to keep them away. But keep them away we must if we wish to keep our lives free from the diseases carried by many of them. In the course of this essay the points presented will refer to living in apartments in Singapore.This is because about 90 percent of Singaporeans live in apartments.

First of all I will purchase an apartment on a high floor. I know that siting an apartment on a higher floor, at least the fifth floor, will keep most of the pests away. Insects such as mosquitoes and flies do not usually fly that high. Rats too are not known to climb to the higher floors.

The next thing to do is to use insect resistant paint to paint the whole apartment. This will include all the walls and wooden parts. For the furniture, I will use wood which has been prepared to resist termites.I realise that of all the destructive insects in the world,the worst are termites. It would not do to block all the ventilators of the apartment, because that will keep out the fresh air and sunshine as well. However, it would be a smart idea to keep the rubbish chute closed at all times. This is because of marauding cockroaches.Anyway, the hardest creatures to keep away are theso insects; which are said to be among the toughest in the world.

The final pest I have to keep away are pigeons. Though they look cute and lovable, they do carry disease – through their droppings. Pigeons will not enter an occupied flat to build nests, but may build them along the corridor. This means we have to walk over their droppings as we walk out or in, or worse still they might actually land on our heads! We are not being cruel by preventing them from building nests, because there are thousands of other places in Singapore they can build their nests in. To keep them away, there are some solutions available. There are chemicals which, if spread at likely nesting places, will keep them off.

We do not really have many insect or animal problems in Singapore, but the few measures I have outlined here will keep them away.
