THE MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT OF MY LIFE

It was supposed to be a talk on ‘Dating for Teenagers’ and it was to be held at Seminar Room A at the library. I had never attended a talk at the library before and did not really want to. Then a few of my classmates started generating interest in it and in the end it became a ‘dare’: If you dared not go, your manhood was in doubt. So I went. As Arnold Schwazzernegger says in ‘Commando’, that was a ‘Big Mistake’. It ended up as the most embarrassing moment of my life and earned me the nick name ‘Foresight’.

I went to the library in good time and saw an arrow pointing up the stairs announcing that the Seminar Rooms were up there. I followed the arrow and came to a room on the second level. There was this attractive girl welcoming people in. She flashed a sweet smile at me. Preoccupied with her smile, I went right in - without looking at the room number or the sign outside the door. I was early and went and sat right in the middle; to make sure that everyone saw that I 'dared' to go. My honour was on the line here.

Then the other people began to arrive. I was mildly surprised because they seemed to be couples, either married or going to be married. I craned my neck; looking around for the others from my class. I saw no one. I began to think that for all their big talk, they were chicken. I did feel a little odd sitting there among all the couples and wondered why they were casting curious glances at me. I also wondered why, since they were all couples, they needed to learn about dating from a public talk. Then I shrugged my shoulders, said ‘heck’ and looked to the front.

Promptly at 2:00 pm the speaker walked in - a Dr Appu. He introduced his subject: Family Planning! It was only then that I realised that I was in the wrong Seminar Room. I wanted to get up and run out of there screaming, but lacking the guts sat still and pretended to pay attention. To make matters worse the speaker made an honourable mention about me: About how pleased he was to see young people, like me, being interested in a mature subject like family planning. The crowd applauded and I wished the floor would open and I could disappear into it. It didn’t and I sat through the whole hour and a half and learnt so many things that I was not supposed to learn just yet.

Finally the talk ended and I walked out with as much dignity as I could muster. As I came out of the room, whom should I meet? My whole class coming down the stairs from the third floor! Apparently Seminar Room A was on the third floor. With a mighty yell they called out my name, “Walter!” and pointed their forefingers at me. Then they all gathered about me excitedly and assailed me with questions. I could hide nothing: There was this huge computer-printed sign behind me which said everything. Velu, the class smart aleck, commented that I had great ‘foresight’ – gathering knowledge on a subject long before I needed to. And ‘Foresight’ became my nickname after that and still is. Oh, the embarrassment of it all!
