I am fortunate in that there are quite a few people in my life I can turn to in an emergency. However, the first person I will turn to is Uncle Raj. He is not really my uncle but my next door neighbour. It is just that he has been a family friend since the time I was a baby and I have always called him Uncle. I was told that it was he who drove my mother to the hospital to deliver me, because my father was a bundle of nerves. Also he had stayed at the hospital with my father until I arrived.
He is not a very learned man, in that he does not have a degree, but he is wise in the ways of the world. The reason I can depend on him in an emergency is that he is a very calm and collected person. At a time when everyone is emotional, Uncle Raj will keep calm.In fact it is natural for everyone to look to him for directions when there is a panic situation. He knows just what to do. Also, he will take charge instantly and tell everyone else what to do.
I remember a time when Old Mr. Jacobs had a heart attack. His wife panicked and just started wailing. My mother did not know what to do. Uncle Raj was just coming out of the lift. Immediately he took charge. In his usual calm manner, he started giving instructions. Then he knelt down and started applying everything he knew about reviving a heart attack patient. It was education to watch him. In seconds Mr. Jacobs opened his eyes. Then the ambulance men arrived and took the old man away. Uncle Raj just hugged the frightened, but grateful, Mrs. Jacobs and then went and got her a drink. Once she was comfortable, he calmly went home. It was only then that I realised that Uncle Raj knew quite a bit about First Aid. Later I learnt that he had served in the St. John’s Ambulance for many years. Yet he had never mentioned it before. It is not his nature to brag.
My reason to turn to him in an emergency is not only because the man knows what to do – always as am inclined to think. I will call him because he never panics but takes complete charge of the situation, as ifit was the most natural thing in the world to do. Also,he gets involved. He is not the type who stands aside and watches what is going on. He dives into every emergency if he happens to be nearby and does everything in his power to help anyone – even complete strangers. Then when everything is done, he just walks away waving aside the words of thanks that are usually heaped on him. He does not like to be praised or even thanked too much.
