OBEYING THE LAW

Everything in nature is regulated. If we observe the movement of the sun, the moon, the stars and planets- including carth – we see that everything moves according to a system. All of nature is system. A slight deviation from any of these will lead to disaster. Perhaps after observing nature man realised that order is good. So in order to regulate his life, he introduced laws.

If we trace the history of man, we see that civilisation goes with law. If we say a society is civilised, we always mean that they have laws too. The place of law in society has not changed in a thousand years and good people hope they never will.

It is the adherence to law that controls crime. It is what gives us rights over our properties and prevents others from taking away what is rightfully ours. It is fear of the law that keeps criminals away from taking advantage of weaker people, otherwise the world will be ruled by what is known as the law of the jungle – or ‘might makes right’.

When we live in a country – as a citizen or as a guest — we undertake to obey the laws of that country. This agreement is unsigned and automatic. Also, the law is equal towards all regardless of who the person is. It is because of law that we are able to live peacefully. It protects the weak against the strong. It makes the weak strong enough to stand for his or her own rights – knowing that the law stands with him or her.

The laws of Singapore are severe and rightly so. It is because of our strict laws that our crime rate is one of the lowest in the world. This is remarkable especially considering that we are a city state. It is our laws which make it safe for us to walk in the streets at night and feel that we are going to get home without any problem. It is of such things that we should all be proud, regardless of what other people or countries say.
