MY FAVOURITE PARK

I believe that the Esplanade is one of the oldest parks in Singapore. It is situated near Marina Centre and is along the seaside. On one side of the park is the Padang and on the other is the sea. As we face the sea, towards the right is the Singapore River. Standing at the Esplanade, we can still see the tongkangs plying the river, except that nowadays they do not carry goods anymore. The tongkangs have recently become river taxis. They operate on the Singapore River between Boat Quay and Clarke Quay.

The park itself is covered with a few monuments and fountains. The prominent monuments are those built by the people of Singapore in memory of the soldiers who died fighting the Japanese during World War Two There are also a couple of very old fountains with all sorts of Greek gods and goddesses on them. Though old, the fountains are well maintained and still look beautiful. Other attractions of the park are the beautiful gardens and the sea front. I could spend hours standing there looking at the sea and watching the ships go into and out of the port. From where I stand, I can also see the Merlion Park. The Merlion looks so majestic as it stands there spewing water into the sea. I think the Merlion looks better when seen from the Esplanade than when seen from closer up.

The park is popular among Singaporeans because it is in the heart of Singapore City. It is in the most historic part of Singapore and is in fact only a couple of hundred metres from where Sir Stamford Raffles landed in 1819. Other prominent historical establishments near the Espla nade are Parliament House, the Supreme Court and Empress Place.

In my opinion, the Esplanade is the most beautiful park in Singapore.
