They told me that there was no train to Penang They said that I had to stop at Butterworth and then take a bus to Penang. Salim produced a map and showed it to me. “Look, the railway tracks stop at Butterworth,” he said. I nodded and thanked him and borrowed the map. I said. “Ok, I’ll take the train and switch at Butterworth.” ”Why the trouble? Better to take the bus all the way,” they said in unison. “I don’t particularly love trains,” I replied, “I hate buses.” So I took the Express Rayaat.

I leaned back in my seat and started to read my book. I was alone and happy to be alone. One hour later I felt bored. I discovered that I did not really like what I was reading. There was only one thing left to do – enjoy the ride. I decided to observe and appreciate the scenery. Just then we were approaching Keluang – according to Salim’s map. I looked about at the kampongs. Little children stood there smiling. I waved at them and they waved back. Then I saw adults and waved at them too. They also waved back. Malaysians were friendly people, I knew that. I observed the neat rubber trees and saw the workers walking about in them. There was a pretty girl among them. I was on a moving train and decided to be brave. I waved at her. She gave me a dazzling smile that made me wish I was not on a train. I wish I had captured that smile with my camera.

Then I realised that it was not the smile that made me happy. It was the fact that I had been able to make silent contact with a human being, unknown to me. It was the fact that I could wave at people I did not know and that they waved back at me. I then realised. We are all people. We are not part of the scenery. As long as I had thought that they were insignificant, they were and so was I. When I recognised them as people, they recognised me.

What a beautiful ride I had after that. I waved at all my beautiful fellow humans and they all waved back at me. Almost suddenly I found myself in Butterworth. I got off the train reluctantly and hailed a taxi.
