Write a narrative essay about a wedding

The ceremony was elaborate and I could see that my Indian friends really loved ritual. I had received a full briefing about what was about to take place so I knew what to expect at each stage. The elders were gathered and everyone was dressed in their best. A wedding was a serious event. The classical musicians went at their duty with gusto.

First came the groom and went through an elaborate purification ceremony. Three women were selected by the priest to help. They went on to perform a series of blessings. They were all calculated on cleaning the groom of all the bad luck he may have accumulated. After that it was the bride’s turn. She went through an exact ceremony as the groom did. Meanwhile the groom was dressing up in his traditional suit.

After the purification, the bride went to change into her bridal saree. At this time the priest was getting excited. The time for the wedding was drawing near. Then the groom came in, escorted by the best man. In Hindu weddings, the best man is traditionally the bride’s younger brother. In this case she did not have a younger brother so a cousin filled in. The groom was now dressed in a veshti. Soon his bride emerged and a gasp came out from the crowd. She was beautifully dressed in a bright yellow saree. Slowly and gracefully she walked to the dais and sat beside her husband to be the priest went on to chant the sacred words that made the couple man and wife. This was done before the parents of the bride and those of the groom. A few more rituals followed. Immediately after this was the blessing of the couple by the elders. One by one they went up and blessed the couple and gave them their presents. Then it was the turn of the others. I went up to join the queue and, when it was my turn, shook hands with both of them and went to the hall for a sumptuous Indian meal.
