National Day Celebrations

Our National Day falls on 9 August every year. Throughout the whole year this is the only celebration that everyone celebrates. All other holidays of the year are celebrated by some group or other. National Day is for everyone. For my family National Day is special and so we usually get into the swing of things and celebrate it several times.

Last year, we celebrated National Day first in school. There was the usual speech making and con cert and a good time was had by all. We were happy that every event that took place emphasised those things which are sacred to Singapore, mostly based on our multi racial nature. There were ethnic dances, music and plays. Everywhere the atmosphere of togetherness prevailed.

On National Day itself we celebrated at the Padang. My family had never missed going to the parade for as long as I can remember. My father is a fierce patriot and insists that we must see the actual parade. Last year the parade was grand as usual, but what I enjoyed seeing the most was the cultural items. I was fascinated that even kindergarten children participated. We stayed at the parade until the last event and then left. My father said that it was an occasion for celebration and took the family out to dinner at one of the most expensive restaurants in town.

The celebrations did not end there. The Residents’ Committee, in which my father is a committee member, organised a grand dinner a week after the parade. Naturally my family went. My father booked a whole table and invited some of our relatives and friends to join us.

I am glad that National Day is such an occasion for celebration and will definitely continue the tradition that my father has started.
