My School Anniversary

It was the school’s 100th anniversary and we put in a lot of effort to celebrate it. It also marked a sad occasion. The building was to be torn down and we were to move to a new location. This could not be helped as the building was old and badly in need of repairs. Also, HDB had struck again!

On the day of the celebration, we had all sorts of crazy events. There was a fancy dress football match— with no rules — between the teachers and the students. At the end of the match it was announced that the students had won. This came as a surprise because the students had let in three goals in comparison to the teachers’ two. Then the organisers made the revelation that the rule was to let in as many goals as possible! There was loud cheering from the students as the team went forward to receive the prizes. The cheering turned to loud laughter when it turned out that each player received a back scratcher as a prize. More funny business followed throughout the day Everything went in reverse. There were games galore and talentime and dancing. Everyone had a good time.

At night it was the grand dinner. All the old boys of the school, who could be contacted were invited and many turned up. At exactly 7:30 pm the band struck up the school song and we joined in. I observed that the old boys were singing too. The recent old boys could remember the words but the older old boys were merely moving their lips and pretending to sing. My table was near theirs and I took note of this. My friends and I grinned at their helplessness and their ingenuity.

The principal made a speech. Then invited an old boy who was a VIP to say something. He made a long boring speech for ten minutes after apologising for not being prepared. One of the things he said made everyone look about him nervously: He said that the dead old boys of the school were there in spirit! Then it was dinner time. My friends and I helped to serve and we had a good time keeping our ears open. AIl the old boys were talking about the good old days.

The dinner ended at about 10:00 pm but we went home at about midnight. We had to help to clean up the mess.
